Gas prices across the state have held steady ahead of an increase in the Missouri gas tax that will take effect next Friday. According to the AAA Missouri Weekend Gas Watch, the statewide gas price average is $2.85. That price is one cent higher compared to last week and 97 cents more per gallon than last year. Drivers in Southeast Missouri are paying $2.86 on average, which is five cents higher than a week ago and 99 cents higher than a year ago. Gas prices in Sikeston were at $2.89 on Friday morning. On Oct. 1, Missouri drivers will pay an additional 2.5 cents per gallon as the first installment of the gas tax takes effect. The measure will gradually raise the state’s gas tax by 12.5 cents over the next five years. The gas tax hike is expected to bring in $460 million yearly for the state’s roads and bridges.
