Ex-Rep. Jonathan Shell running for agriculture commissioner

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Former Kentucky state Rep. Jonathan Shell has announced he’ll run for state agriculture commissioner in 2023. Shell helped orchestrate Republicans’ historic takeover of the Kentucky House in 2016. He’s a former member of House leadership. He’s looking to relaunch a political career that was derailed in 2018 when he lost his reelection bid to the legislature in the GOP primary. Shell is a fifth-generation farmer from Garrard County. In announcing his plans Wednesday, he promised to defend agriculture and “conservative Kentucky values.” Current Agriculture Commissioner Ryan Quarles is in his second term and is considering a run for governor.
