Cape Girardeau Safe House for Domestic Violence to Change Name
One local safe house for domestic violence is changing its name. The safe house in Cape Girardeau will now be called the Safe House of Southeast Missouri. Officials say the name change is to represent everyone in the region regardless of gender and they are serving about 250 individuals in residential services every year and a growing number of these are men. They also say they have housed victims of both genders since 2019 and they are still trying to get the word out that people of both genders can find support and shelter at the Safe House. Officials say the goal is to help diverse victims and encourage them to share their stories. In addition, Cape Girardeau police are responding to more calls from men who are victims of domestic abuse. Officials say that as the Safe House adapts to the current and future residents, their answer to a call for help will always remain the same. The name will legally change to the Safe House of Southeast Missouri on September 1, 2021.
