Cape Girardeau Police opened an investigation for arson following the Broadway Theatre fire on March 31, 2021 and as of Monday, the investigation is still open. Police say detectives have interviewed multiple people in relation to the incident, but none of them have offered pertinent information. They also say there hasn’t been enough evidence to establish formal charges on a suspect at this point. The fire cost an estimated $300,000 in damage. The Cape Girardeau Broadway Theater aims to raise a total of $250,000 through a GoFundMe campaign. The initial $250,000 will pay for a structural engineer to assess the building for a new roof and construction to stabilize the front of theater. In 2015, the Broadway Theater was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
