The Cape Girardeau County Health Center was informed that there is the potential presence of the delta variant of COVID 19 in the county, officials say. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services recently ran a test of wastewater in Cape Girardeau County. The tests search for genetic markers of a more contagious strain of COVID 19- the delta variant. A sample of wastewater taken on June 21, 2021 in Cape Girardeau County found genetic markers of the delta variant. Officials say the tests do not look for the delta variant’s whole genetic code, so it can’t be 100 percent confirmed the genetic markers the DHSS found are from the delta variant. Data from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services found that an estimated 35.5 percent of Cape Girardeau residents are fully vaccinated and about 44.4 percent of state residents have been fully vaccinated.
