Man Who Was Killed in Officer Involved Shooting in Carterville Identified

One man is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Carterville involving two officers. The man was identified as 52-year-old Joseph D. McGrath, of Carterville. Police say it happened in the 200 block of Dobson Street on Tuesday, July 6 around 2:57 p.m. Carterville police received a call about a man with a gun outside of a home. The preliminary investigation, two responding Carterville police officers encountered McGrath with a shotgun on the front porch of his home. Officers repeatedly ordered the man to put the gun down, but instead he raised the gun towards officers. Carterville police then shot McGrath. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Williamson County coroner. They said no responding Carterville police officers were injured. ISP is leading the investigation and it is ongoing.
