Police Searching for Mount Vernon Shooting Suspect

One person is dead and a suspect is wanted after a fatal shooting in Mt. Vernon Sunday. Police responded to the Corner Tavern around 1:40 a.m. for a shooting. A man with injuries was taken from the scene to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead. During the investigation, detectives identified 29-year-old Jaquez Gardner as the main suspect in the shooting. Mt. Vernon Police officers, Jefferson County deputies and detectives searched several homes Sunday morning in an attempt to locate Gardner, but he has not been found .He is now wanted on a warrant for first degree murder and armed habitual offender charges. Gardner is currently on parole from the Illinois Department of Corrections for a previous shooting conviction. The Illinois Department of Corrections has also issued a parole violation warrant for his arrest.
