The Cape Girardeau School Board gave their approval to the selection of Brockmiller Construction out of Farmington Missouri as the general contractor on the Jefferson Civic Center project that will include a pool and work is expected to start soon. Brockmiller Construction was the company with the lowest bid out of four finalists whenever the bidding process was opened back on June 17, 2021. Their bid includes an option for an indoor-outdoor slide addition and their bid was for 11,297,000. Over three years ago, local voters approved a renewal of the Parks, Recreation and Stormwater tax that is referred to PRS2 that includes $6 million dollars in funding for an indoor aquatic center. In April of 2019, school district voters approved a $4 million bond issue for this project. Officials said that they were notified of additional funding available through the Federal American Rescue Plan on May 24, 2021.In addition to a new aquatics center, this project includes a new preschool center, four new classrooms , improvements to the commons area and kitchen and a new gym. Officials say the formal groundbreaking should take place in the next couple of weeks.
