Cape Girardeau, Mo., will once again host an overnight stop for the Great Race. Tuesday, June 22 we will welcome racers into our river city on day four of the cross country endurance race. The start will be in front of the Alamo in San Antonio, on June 19. The race will finish on June 27 in Greenville, S.C. Teams and cars from Japan, England, Germany, Canada, and every corner of the United States will be participating in their vintage automobiles dating back as far as 1916.Each stop on the Great Race is free to the public and spectators will be able to visit with the participants and look at the cars for several hours. It is common for kids to climb in cars for a first-hand look. How can you enjoy the Great Race while they’re in Cape Girardeau? Park a lawn chair along Broadway to see the Great Racers head to the Day 4 finish line–they will be arriving in one-minute intervals starting after 5 pm until about 6:30 pm—or visit with the Great Racers and see hundreds of vintage cars at our Welcome Party for them in Downtown Cape Girardeau! Great Racers and other vintage cars participating in the Cruise-In will be parked along Main Street and Water Street, from Broadway down to Independence and William Street until around 8:30 pm.Businesses along the Great Race route (Kingshighway to Broadway and Broadway to Main and Water Street) are invited to decorate their business’ Windows and/or Lawns celebrating the arrival of the Great Racers to Cape Girardeau on June 22, 2021. Storefront windows and lawn decorations will be judged on visibility, creativity, extended hours (for the event Downtown), special deals or sales, and originality. The two winning businesses in each category (Window or Lawn) will receive the Spirit of the Race Award to be displayed in their store.
