Republican Leaders in Illinois File Lawsuit That Apposes New Redistricting Maps

A lawsuit has been filed in opposition to the new redistricting maps signed by Governor JB Pritzker.  Two Republican Leaders, Jim Durkin and Dan McConchie recently filed a lawsuit in federal court to challenge the legislative maps drawn and passed by  state Democrats in the General Assembly and signed into law by Governor JB Pritzker. This lawsuit filed against Illinois House Speaker Emanuel Chris Welch (in his official capacity) and Illinois Senate President Don Harmon (in his official capacity), among others. It makes the request that the court declare the Democrats’ plan to be unconstitutional, invalid, and void ab initio. In addition, this lawsuit also makes the request that the court direct Speaker Welch and President Harmon to make their appointments to the state’s Legislative Redistricting Commission as needed by the state constitution. The governor’s office says the district boundaries account for population changes in Illinois particularly in the regions that saw the most population loss as recorded by U.S. Census’ American Community Survey. This lawsuit argues that the usage f American Community Survey (ACS) estimates violates the federal law, including well established “one-person, one-vote” principles under the U.S. Constitution.
