A new location of Autism Support Now had its grand opening Tuesday night. It is the only location of Autism Support Now in the entire region. This organization is the only one of a handful of autism-support institutions providing care to children who are eligible to receive Medicaid, officials say. The therapy clinic off Lexington Avenue in Cape Girardeau will be offering individualized behavioral treatment programs which are based on principles of applied behavior analysis (ABA), a science-based type of therapy with a focal point of making learning and behaviors better. Besides the new facility in Cape Girardeau, Autism Support Now has four locations in the Kansas City Metro area. The new location in Cape Girardeau will serve children aged 18 months to 14 years old. Autism Support Now opened a much smaller facility in Cape Girardeau three years ago and when the first location opened, it immediately filled up and had a waitlist with wait times of a half a year to a year. The new facility will host almost three times as many children than the old location and it has a main floor as well as a basement that is full size. Autism Support Now offers clinic services from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the regular academic year. Officials are hoping to have fifteen to twenty children in each of the building’s levels. Officials say every child currently has their own therapist and the facility has a near even staff-to-client ratio.
