Cape Girardeau city officials recently presented the yearly settlement of the Cape Girardeau County Collector’s office and a report of unpaid taxes to county commissioners during a meeting on Monday. The settlement revealed that a total of $83,275,783.81 was charged in personal property, real estate, utility and railroad taxes as of the end of the collector’s year, which started on March 1, 2020 and concluded on February 28, 2021. Of the total amount charged, $75,988,977.87 was collected and distributed. Cape Girardeau County schools received the most $57,078,875.22. Cities within Cape Girardeau County received a total of $4,616,451.63 cooperatively, and the county’s fire districts received $2,048,460. All of the other distributions that were worth more than one million dollars were awarded to the Cape Girardeau Public Library, the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, surtax, mental health and county revenue.
