Crews Close Gates at Cape Girardeau Due to High River Levels

Cape Girardeau Public Works employees closed the gates downtown as river levels. Currently, the Mississippi River levels are at moderate stage sitting at 36.6 feet. Officials say they were concerned that there might be some issues with the rain coming into town based on the projected weather forecast. The river is currently is 5.1 feet above the flood stage level and is expected to rise until Thursday before the levels drop. The river is expected to fall below the flood stage late Thursday or Friday. When the river reaches 35.5 feet, public works close the flood gates as a safety precaution. Official’s crews are preparing or similar conditions when summer storms hit.
