Two Catholic entities are currently building new spaces in Cape Girardeau. Members of The Catholic Social Ministries Food Pantry, part of St. Mary’s Cathedral and Old St. Vincent’s Church, are currently raising funds for a new building to serve their mission in Cape Girardeau County. Currently, $507,000 has been raised and they need to raise $293,000 more to start construction. Officials say there has been a growth in the need for the pantry’s services and they currently serve 1,800 people from 640 families once a month who are residents of Cape Girardeau County. The organization’s new building will be 6,000-square-feet, it will have a walk-in cooler and a freezer, along with ceilings that are higher pallet racks and separate office and check-in areas. The new features will increase capacity to serve, efficiency to buy in bulk and make safety better for their volunteers. On the campus of Southeast Missouri State University the new Newman Center is on track to open prior to the fall semester. Officials say they were able to reach their fundraising goal and keep the project of track to be able to consecrate the building on August 22, 2021. In a month, construction will start on a neighboring structure with classrooms and offices of the Aquinas Institute for Catholic Studies.
