COVID 19 Still Dampers Traffic at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport

Officials at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport informed members of their advisory board that passenger traffic at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport through SkyWest Airlines currently stands at 41 percent of what it was at this point last year. There have been 551 passengers so far this year and there were a total of 1,341 passengers at this point last year. SkyWest Airlines currently offers flights to and from O’Hare Airport in Chicago. Officials say Volaire Aviation Consulting is planning to give the board a full half-hour report on the status of airline travel next month. Officials said they were told by Volaire Aviation Consulting that they should expect a pickup in passengers toward the summer season because of the optimism that coronavirus vaccine doses are being more readily available, but they say they were told not to expect heavy traffic.  Officials say that local numbers statistics seem to mirror the industry trend and around 70 percent of the airport’s passenger traffic historically is for business travel and they are still bullish about this sector eventually returning to normal in time. Officials say there will be changes o travel behaviors by businesses that see the advantage of virtual meetings, but they believe they’re seeing zoom fatigue and individuals prefer in-person interaction.
