Primary Election Necessary to Decide City Council Seat

A primary election will be necessary to determine a seat on the Sikeston City Council. City officials say (Charles)Vest Baker has filed for Councilman in Ward 2 and this filing will call for a primary election between him, Pershard D. Owens and James V. Crowe, Sr. This election will be held on February 2, 2021 and the top two candidates from this election will square off on April 6, 2021. The seats that are currently up for election are for Mayor Steven Burch, Ward 2 council member Gerald Settles and Ward 3 council member Karen Evans and all three of these individuals have reached the end of their term. Both  John Graham and Greg Turnbow  have filed for mayor and David Teachout has filed for the  vacant seat in ward 3.Individuals that are interested in running for a position on the city council has to be qualified voter in the city and they have to be 21 years of age or older. In addition, all ward candidates have to be a current resident of the ward that they are filing for a least a single year immediately before the last day to file for election. A $15 filing fee is required.  Those who are interested can find out additional information by contacting the city clerk. The filing period will conclude at 5 p.m. on November 17, 2020.
