Ameren Illinois Working to Replace Lighting in Several Southern Illinois Cities

Ameren Illinois officials are working with the cities of Benton Herrin, Murphysboro and West Frankfort to improve neighborhood streetlights with LED (light-emitting diode) streetlights which are more energy efficient. Ameren Illinois officials are replacing around 800 currant sodium vapor, mercury vapor and metal halide streetlights with LEDs to assist these communities in saving energy. The replacement project started in Benton on Monday and the project is expected to be finished at the end of the month. Company officials have contracted with vendor, Pro Electric, to complete the replacement project with assistance from IBEW-trained electrical workers. Officials say they are looking forward to seeing the cost savings and improved visibility which comes with LED streetlights. The benefits of LED streetlights include, saving money with increased reliability and three times longer life expectancy. Ameren Illinois will be replacing streetlights within their service territory. At the end of the calendar year Ameren Illinois will have replaced a total of 50,000 streetlights throughout central and southern Illinois.
