Government officials recently announced that the Sikeston R-6 School District is receiving a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant that’s worth over $1 million to construct a community safe room. Officials say safe rooms are a lifeline for state residents that live in areas that are often hit by severe storms and tornadoes and this project has been a year- long priority for the local community. They say they are glad they will have the funding they need to construct this life saving building. The recently awarded grant will fund the building of a new community safe room at the Sikeston R-6 School District – Kindergarten Center Campus in Sikeston. In addition to being a safe spot from storms the new building will also be utilized as a performing arts center/multi-purpose space. A total of 492 people can be in there at a given time.
