New Sales Tax Now in Effect in Many Communities in Southeast Missouri

Many voter-approved sales tax increases have taken effect in several communities in Southeast Missouri. Officials with the Missouri Department of Revenue say most of the sales tax increases are 1/2 percent. Back on June 2, , voters approved the county-wide half-cent sales tax to give the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office additional money to provide public safety services . Officials say the goals with this new tax are to add ten more patrol officers and eleven more jail officers after money begins to come in. Officials with the North Scott County Ambulance District say the sales tax will raise revenue for them to hire more Emergency Medical Technicians and Paramedics to cut back on working hours for current staff and buy life saving equipment, ambulances and building improvements currently and in the future.
