Shawnee District Officials Transitioning to Hybrid Instruction for Students

All students in the Shawnee School District in Wolf Lake Illinois will start a “hybrid” learning model, consisting of four days of normal classroom instruction and only one day of virtual instruction every week beginning on October 5, 2020. Members of the district’s Board of Education recently voted in favor of the hybrid model. The Shawnee School District’s student body started the current school year with virtual instruction because many of their faculty and staff were quarantined because of the coroanavirus. As of last week, almost a third of the district’s employees were in quarantine. District officials say members of the board of education understand this is a sensitive and emotional topic, but currently, there isn’t a right answer for everyone. They also say that regardless of whether board members decided to continue with virtual learning or switch to either classroom instruction or hybrid instruction, the decision they made wasn’t going to be perfect for all of the families in the district. District officials had previously made plans to start the school year in a hybrid mode.
