National Housing Program Assists Local Landlords Make Their Properties Safer for Tenants

The Cape Girardeau Police Department has a national housing program to assist area landlords in creating a safer living environment for those who rent from them. Officials say landlords can learn ways to screen out tenants as well as make their current properties more secure and they help them through the tenant landlord laws with the program. When landlords become certified by the Crime Free Multi Housing unit, this certification becomes a great marketing tool for the housing complex.  Officials say that landlords will have the option to certify each of the properties they own through this program. Due to the fact that every property is different tenants will have different needs on each property. This will be beneficial to citizens searching for a place to live. Officials say that residents know that the landlord is concerned about their safety and they have taken steps to make sure that the property they are renting is a safe place to live and that the landlord cares about that. This program is free for landlords. This program consists of an assessment by the police department to inspect the property to look for safety measures and the entire process lasts three to four weeks. Any landlords that are interested in the program can contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department for more information.
