The Poplar Bluff School District was recently awarded a $5,000 Lowe’s Toolbox for Education grant to be used to renovate the gymnasium in the junior high school. The gym is the district’s oldest facility and it goes back to82 years. Members of the school district were able to match he grant’s funds for the remodel. Custom window coverings that say P-B-J-H-S M-U-L-E-S across the top of the gym were put in at the beginning of September. Over the past several months there have been new basketball goals put in, the gym has gotten a fresh coat of paint and new scoreboards have been installed as well as wall mounted padding. The gym is where all the junior high students come in to the school building every school day. In addition the gym is also used for basketball and volleyball games by travel sports, youth leagues and the Poplar Bluff Parks Department. Officials say when other high priority projects are finished like roof replacements across campus they look forward to revisiting the long-range plan with committee members and maybe directing additional renovation work at the historic building.
