Governor JB Pritzker confirmed the state will provide a total of $40 million worth of Rebuild Illinois funds to construct a new inland port in Cairo at the confluence of both the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Illinois will immediately grant a total of $4 million to the Alexander Cairo Port District to pay for engineering, permitting along with site preparation at the new port. Officials expect this project to become one of the major transportation hub throughout the Midwestern United States. This will create several new jobs and advance the economy of the Southern Illinois region. Officials say this project is a representation of one of the biggest investments within the region in decades.
