Man Charged in Fatal Shooting

The Jefferson County State’s Attorney’s Office has filed murder and robbery charges in a fatal shooting in Mt. Vernon. The man who was charged was identified as 30 year-old Traviel C. Gibson. He is charged with three counts of first degree murder and one count of robbery. Around 11 a.m. Wednesday, officers responded to the 1800 block of Cherry Street. A woman told officers a man attacked her and stole her cell phone. When police arrived, they discovered a man dead on the front porch and a second man, later identified as Gibson, in the home refusing to come out. One officer suffered minor injuries taking Gibson into custody. He is currently being held at the Jefferson County Justice Center on $3 million bond and a preliminary hearing is set for June 2.
