Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the alleged suspect in a suspicious fire at the Islamic Center in Cape Girardeau. They say it is believed the suspect is wearing a dark-colored sweatshirt and light-colored pants. Anyone who has information about the case can call the police department at 573-335-6621, or the anonymous tip line at 573-339-6313 or text “CAPEPD” to 847411. Fire crews were called out at 5 a.m. on Friday, April 24 to a fire at the Islamic Center. Officials say it is unknown what started the fire, but they believe it started at the front door and they consider the fire to be suspicious. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for starting the fire. Cape Girardeau police responded to the scene, and the State Fire Marshal and the ATF and the FBI are also investigating. Police say they are investigating it as a potential arson and witnesses reported to police that they did see people in the area. Police are asking for anyone who drove by the area shortly before 5 a.m. to contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department at 573-335-6621 and speak with detectives. Officials say the building had significant damage to the front entrance and on the second floor. The entrance and the side of the building had smoke damage. The structure on West End Boulevard was evacuated, including tenants living in the apartments on the second floor. As crews battled the fire, smoke could be seen coming out of several second story windows. Everyone made it out of the building safely and all have been accounted for.
