Construction Continues on Center Junction Project

Construction on the Diverging Diamond Interchange will continue this week with the lengthening of the acceleration ramp of the right lane on northbound I-55. This section of roadway will be closed today through Friday from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily. Lane closures that have a 10-foot width restriction, will take place on northbound I-55 from next Monday through April 3, 2020 so workers can start construction for the crossover. These closures will be in place for 24 hours. Officials say the lane closures will be in place to allow crews to make the shoulders stronger and make the acceleration ramps longer. They say the preliminary work will eventually allow crews to replace both the north and southbound bridges and construct a diverging diamond interchange. The whole project is set to take about a year and nine months to complete. Officials say weather and space constraints are the project’s biggest complications. As the project progresses motorists can expect to see changes in traffic flow. By mid-April, construction crews will start to tear down the southbound bridge, replacing the southbound bridge and constructing the diverging diamond interchange. Crews will start work to replace the northbound bridge by the beginning of next year. Drivers are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.
