City Leaders in Mount Vernon are currently deciding on whether to make increases to either the city’s property or sales tax in order for the city to pay off debt of a state bill. The total of the bill the city must pay off is $491,000. City officials say that’s a lot of money at one time and the state requires the city’s pension fund to be 80 or 90 percent funded by the year 2040 and the city doesn’t want a tax increase but has run out of options. Officials stated that they decided to have their and taxation hearing in case that was the direction they wanted to go because if they had not they would have shut the door to property taxes. Officials also say the city is constantly working on ways to save money. The city plans to vote on the property tax levy on December 2, 2019.
