Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth announced on Wednesday that the city of Carbondale has been awarded $14 million in federal funding for the Carbondale Station Multimodal Project. The funding will be provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) BUILD grant program. City officials say, this award is a major investment in rural transportation that will improve the lives of many working families in their region while also providing high-paying construction jobs. The new multimodal facility will be home to the region’s public transportation providers, Amtrak and Greyhound bus service. This will create several connections between all forms of transportation. The new project will also have the first bike sharing service in the area.
