Cape Girardeau Circuit Clerks Restricting Access to Public Records

The County Clerk’s Office in Cape Girardeau will no longer allow citizens of the public or media outlets to obtain court records from a public computer in the Common Pleas Courthouse. If documents are printed by request, they can only be printed by city staff, but all documents will be redacted so they won’t show any personal information. Officials say, it appears under state law and a Missouri Supreme Court Rule that circuit clerks are not supposed to print redacted required information. Officials also say the law states Social Security Numbers and other personal information may be discriminated against if such records are open to the public. The new rule in printing court records doesn’t concern attorneys they have complete access to court records inside computers from their court offices.
