Starting after the first of the year residents all across Illinois will have the option to purchase marijuana over the counter. To purchase marijuana over the counter in Cape Girardeau residents must by 21 years of age and use the drug from licensed dispensaries across the state. The new law that was signed into law by governor Pritzger states that dispensaries can sell both medical and recreational cannabis products if they pay for it or pay a tax for it of at least three percent on the sale of municipality’s sales. The law also states, municipalities can opt out of having dispensaries that sell recreational marijuana. City leaders throughout the area say, city leaders haven’t had the opportunity to make a unified decision regarding opting out. They plan to hold a meeting to vote on it but no date has been set.
