Early Morning Fire Breaks Out At Forest Office

Fire crews in Murphysboro were called out to a fire that broke out at a local forest office. Firefighters say, a passerby reported seeing flames coming from the roof of the Shawnee National Forest Work Center approximately 12:30 a.m. Fire fighters say, that when they arrived on the scene flames could be seen coming out of the roof of the building.  Crews were able to get the fire under control in half an hour. Fire fighters say, they believe the electrical failure sparked the fire in a void space in the wall of the building. The flames then traveled up through the attic. No one was injured in the fire, and the building sustained moderate damage and cannot be used at this time.
