Two Student organizations, SIUC Young Democratic Socialists of America and the Southern Illinois Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America, are pushing for free tuition at Southern Illinois. The two student groups conducted a meeting in the campus library on Thursday November 1, 2018. All extra circular activities cannot be funded without tuition. Sufficient University funding doesn’t come from the state, so free tuition doesn’t seem feasible. Funding has to come from somewhere, either the student in the form of tuition or from the tax payer in the form of increase taxes.
