The Illinois Department of Transportation held their first Traffic Safety Summit Partnering Toward Zero Deaths. This is being done to bring local agencies from around the state to find solutions to distracted driving. Texting and driving — and other forms of distracted driving — is a growing public safety hazard, suspected of contributing to the increasing number of traffic deaths in Illinois. The last two years, traffic deaths in Illinois surpassed 1,000, the highest in a decade and mirroring national trends. In addition to speakers from IDOT, other participants included: a distracted driving community advocate, traffic safety engineers, educators, first responders and other law enforcement. Earlier this year, IDOT launched Life or Death Illinois, a multimedia campaign to deal with distracted driving.
