Missouri Department of Corrections is facing a staffing shortage. Budget plans by Governor Eric Greitens say there will be eight fewer workers starting July 2018, but the shortage is already impacting overtime costs. Last year, the prison system spent $19 million in overtime costs. In the first few months of Fiscal Year 2018, overtime is already $7 million. The department is attempting to lower the minimum qualifying age to become an officer from 21 to 19. Missouri currently has more than 33,000 inmates in its prisons.
