SIUC faculty vote “no” on dissolving departments

Faculty Senate at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale approved a resolution that opposes elimination of departments. University Chancellor Carlo Montemagno said dissolving departments was key to the restructuring the university. The plan was to dissolve departments and reduce the number of colleges from eight to five with schools running within them. Departments and chair positions would be eliminated saving approximately $2.3 million in administrative costs. The Faculty Senate said dissolving departments would result in institutional instability.
