The Kentucky State Police says they’re facing a shortage of officers and an aging fleet. The state has 840 sworn officers, but officials say they need 1,070 to be considered fully staffed. The officers are currently issued Vietnam-era rifles that are soon to be recalled by the U.S. Department of Defense. To retire their aging fleet, the state will need 260 cars within 12 to 18 months and then 180 new cars every year until the fleet is completely replaced.
