Cairo, IL, residents visit Chicago HUD office

Residents of Cairo, Illinois’ federal housing units were in Chicago this week asking United States Department of Housing and Urban Development not to demolish their homes. HUD announced in April that 185 families living in the Elmwood and McBride housing units in Cairo would have to be relocated to other towns. The department says the housing developments are unsafe to live in. Residents will be given Tenane Protection Vouchers that will subsidize rent to private land lord and will receive help moving and finding new places to live. The press conference in Chicago was hosted by governor candidate Ameya Pawar of Chicago and his running mate, Cairo Mayor Tyrone Coleman.
