One of the victims of the notorious Wayne Gacy has been identified as 16-year-old Minnesota runaway James Byron Haakenson.
Haakenson was one of the eight victims buried in 1978 without identification after the bodies were found in the crawlspace of Gacy’s Chicago home.
In 1978, Gacy was convicted of killing 33 men and was executed in 1994.
In 2011, Cook County sheriff’s office exhumed the grave of the eight unidentified victims for DNA evaluation. The office asked families of men who disappeared between 1970 and 1978 to submit DNA samples to match to the victims. The DNA samples have been effective in identifying another of Gacy’s victims as well as other unidentified persons in other states.
